A new employee at school enquired about The Anchor. I don’t know how she found out. I’m assuming it was word of mouth. Everyone at school (or most) know I’m a pastor of a church. She asked for a flier with some information on the church. The next day I gave her my card and wrote down some more information on the back. I don’t know if she’ll ever attend our bible study, but she was very thankful.
Saturday, I went to Starbucks to do some studying. As I opened the door and looked inside, the girl at the cashier register had a big smile and said hi. I responded with a “Hi, how are you doing?”. She said she was doing good and then asked, “How’s your church going?”!! I was caught off guard and suddenly realized I had spoken with her once before during one of my many Starbucks study sessions. I let her know the “low down” on the church and then said, “Kelly…right?” She looked astonished and replied, “Yeah! Wow you have a really good memory!” I sat down to set up my computer and she brought me my drink with a bread sample. Sweeet!
In life we wonder if what we’re doing is really making an impact…is it getting us or anyone else anywhere? I’m beginning to see that the effort I’ve put into relationships the past two years are yielding some fruit. I haven’t changed who I am. I haven’t really even changed what I’m doing. That can make a person planting a church question one’s self. So, when I hear people in the community enquiring about The Anchor or “my church”, I realize the two years I’ve been here haven’t been wasted…or lost.
Relationships take time. Planting a church takes time. Loving people takes time. Remember, like marriage, many things we do are more about the journey than the destination!
